Sewing Skill Levels

You're completely new to sewing or haven’t sewn for a long time. 

You don't know what the dials and levers on your machine do. 

You've no idea where to start.

Skills you have:

• None
• Sort of know how to use a sewing machine (it's been a long time)

Goal: learn how to operate a sewing machine and how to do common sewing tasks

You’ve recently started sewing. You can thread and operate a sewing machine but sometimes need help. You have made a few simple projects but you needed lots of help. 

If you have successfully completed the Beginner Sewing Course within the last year or so you are at Level 1.

Skills you have:

• Thread and operate a sewing machine - with some help
• Sew secure and straight seams on a sewing machine - with occasional help
• Complete common sewing tasks - with some help
• Can follow a simple sewing pattern - with lots of help
• Can work at a very slow pace  

Goal: make a few new basic projects to practice using a sewing machine and improve completing common sewing tasks.

You've got a bit of sewing experience and have made a few simple craft & homewares projects.  You can thread and operate a sewing machine on your own. You can follow a simple pattern - sometimes you need a little help with interpreting the instructions. You're ready to start sewing simple garments.

Skills you have:

• Thread and operate a sewing machine - without help
• Sew secure and straight seams on a sewing machine - without help
• Complete common sewing tasks - with occasional help
• Can follow a simple sewing pattern - with some help
• Can work at a slow pace  

Goal: keep practicing your sewing skills and learn how to sew basic garments.

You've got a lot of sewing experience and have made a few simple garments. You're confident with using a sewing machine and sewing seams. You can follow a pattern and have started working with garment sewing patterns.

Skills you have:

• Carry out the skills in Level 1 & 2 with confidence
• Understand how to read a garment sewing pattern envelope - with help
• Can select the correct size garment pattern - with help
• Pin and cut out fabric correctly using pattern pieces - with help
• Confidently sew stable cotton fabrics
• Can work to a steady pace  

Goal: learn new sewing techniques or work with new materials - like stretchy knit.

You have mastered sewing basics.  

You have some experience with sewing simple garments projects. 

You have mastered garment sewing basics. You've made a few simple garment projects. You’re ready to extend your garment sewing skills.

Skills you have:

• Carry out the skills in Level 1, 2 & 3 with confidence
• Understand how to read a garment sewing pattern envelope
• Confidently select the correct size garment pattern
• Confidently pin and cut out fabric correctly using pattern pieces
• Confidently sew stable cotton fabrics
• Starting to explore sewing new materials like stretch & slippery fabrics

Goal: practice your existing sewing skills while making projects that require more precision, more pieces or new fabrics

You have mastered the basics of sewing, have started garment sewing, you’re ready to extend your garment sewing skills.
